The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help is committed to helping and supporting those who serve in our Armed Forces, those who used to serve, and the families of both. Trained professional staff provide practical and financial assistance, emotional support and a wide range of services. Their Confidential Support Line enables you talk through a problem in complete confidence with someone outside of the chain of command. Call 0800 731 4880 (free, everyday 10.30am-10.30pm). Go to website www.ssafa.org.uk for more about services available and helpline numbers outside the UK.

ASSIST Trauma Care runs a helpline and other services for individuals and families affected by post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. To talk to someone who understands what you're feeling, call 01788 560 800 (Monday–Friday 10am–1pm). You can also check out the ASSIST Trauma Care website at www.assisttraumacare.org.uk.

If you're feeling distressed and need someone to talk to, you can phone Samaritans at any time of day or night on 08457 90 90 90. Email support is available through jo@samaritans.org and their website is at www.samaritans.org.

Saneline provide crisis care and emotional support to anyone affected by any mental health problem. Trained mental health staff are available to take calls on 0845 767 8000 (local rate, everyday 1-11pm). Or you can check out their website at www.sane.org.uk.

Maytree's aim is to save lives and to relieve the suffering of those at serious and immediate risk of suicide. Providing somewhere safe to stay for people in suicidal crisis, with the space and time they need, to rest and reflect, or talk with total confidentiality. Call 0207 263 7070 for more information or go to www.maytree.org.uk.

If you are supporting someone with suicidal feelings, you can get helpful information from Papyrus, an organisation committed to the prevention of young suicide. Call HOPElineUK on 08000 68 41 41 (free Monday–Friday 10am–2pm and 7–10pm, weekends 2pm–5pm). Or go to www.papyrus-uk.org where you can download useful leaflets.

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide ( SOBS) provide specialist emotional support and practical information for people bereaved by suicide. Call their local rate helpline 0844 561 6855 (every day 9am–9pm), or log on to www.uk-sobs.org.uk.
