Hello Lykke Li from Sweden. Please pick 5 words that describe your debut album 'Youth Novels'.
Intimate, raw, eclectic, sensual, beautiful.
Excellent. How about five that don't describe it?
Pretentious, uneven, polished, clean, static.
Someone in our office has a theory that track seven on any album is always the best. Is that true of yours?
I can't even remember which one that is... Oh, it's 'Little Bit'. The theory kinda works. It's one of the best. My favourites change but I always feel 'Hanging High' is the best. I don't know if people agree with me but, for me, that's a really personal song. It means a lot to me because it's so accurate. I really felt every emotion was true, when I wrote it.
We've just been listening to the new Madonna album. It's a bit boring. Do you think it's possible to make pop music for that long and still be any good?
No, I don't think so. Not pop music, anyway. You have to change yourself and dig into different genres. You can't do pop music for twenty years straight and still be relevant. Pop music is like sticking your finger out and testing where the wind blows, or taking the temperature of society... what kids are into. And it's hard knowing what's on the street when you live in a really nice house that disconnects you from the reality.
When you're Madonna, you can pay people to stick their finger out for you...
But it doesn't feel honest. I would love it if she did an acoustic album; just sat down with no makeup on, with a guitar, and just told us her experiences growing up, or whatever. Not trying to live in the past. But who am I to tell?!
Exactly, what will your records be like in 25 years?
It's not gonna be pop music, not at all. It's gonna be much darker than that. Acoustic, dark songs. Or maybe, who knows, maybe I'll be doing classical music with no singing.
Most people make pop music to escape the lives they've been stuck with, but you seem to have had an ideal, creatively nurturing, upbringing. What do you have to escape?
My own demons. Everybody has that. It doesn't matter what parents you have. And it's not like we were sitting at the dinner table singing songs and making paintings! My dad made a quick lasagne and then I went and hung out with my friends. So I don't think their profession has anything to do with mine. It's all about choices.
We're still wondering what your demons are?
I can't say. If I could tell someone then they wouldn't be demons anymore.
Well, whenever you're ready to talk... You've been described by all the big papers and trendy mags as 'one to watch'. How does it feel being watched?
I don't know. How does it feel to watch? There's a big chance of getting disappointed if everybody has such high expectations.
We'll wait and see.
Then we're on the same level. I'll wait and see too.
