An exhibition about the Roman emperor Hadrian's reign opens at the British Museum this month with over 200 loans from 31 countries.

Hadrian was a great military administrator, who had the famous wall built across northern England to prevent the Caledonians from mounting raids.

He was openly gay, popularised the beard after years of clean-shaven emperors and championed the arts and architecture across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
