The South African singing legend Miriam Makeba has died at the age of 76 after suffering a heart attack following a concert in Italy.

Ms Makeba was a symbol of the struggle against apartheid and lived in exile for three decades until Nelson Mandela was released from prison.

From township beginnings, Ms Makeba conquered the US music scene only to be ostracised for her marriage to a black civil rights leader.

She began her singing career in the 1950s, mixing jazz with traditional South African music, and became the continent's first musical star.
