Britain is not the only country in the doldrums - Pakistan is going through its worst economic crisis in a decade.
Soaring food and energy costs and the global financial turbulence have forced Pakistan to turn to the International Monetary Fund for help.
The country's problems make it more difficult to take on Islamist militants, a key demand of the United States.
Four people have appeared in court, suspected of involvement in last month's Marriott hotel bombings in Islamabad, in which 55 people were killed.
