Nepal's King Gyanendra stands down, not with a bang but with a whimper - and a royal press conference.

The monarchy ruled the Himalayan country for 239 years until it was ousted by the Maoist government elected last month.

It is the war which led the US and its allies into conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, and cost thousands their lives.
