Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama defends his vision of patriotism, calling it "loyalty to America's ideals".

A year ago he wouldn't even pin the stars and stripes on his lapel.

Obama has also distanced himself from a campaign spokesman who questioned whether the Vietnam war experience of his Republican rival John McCain qualified him to be president.

It's all turning into a fierce debate over whose patriotism is greater.
