Hillingdon

Numbers of reported incidents have been increasing over the last few years. This is more to do with a more open culture of reporting incidents rather than an increase in incidents per se. In other words, the number of incidents may not have increased, but schools are more confident about reporting them and investigating where necessary.

Data for the last 4 years are attached. For the current year (06/07) there have been 51 incidents so far.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide racist incident figures by financial year. There have been 11 racist incidents reported by schools since September 2005, when reporting arrangements were established. Of these, 8 were between April 2006 and January 2007, and 3 were between September 2005 and March 2006.

Norfolk

The number of incidents reported by schools has increased year on year as schools have become increasingly vigilant and conscientious about reporting.

Every local authority school in Norfolk has an anti-racist policy and Norfolk County Council has a race equality scheme.

Schools also have website access to our anti racist guidance and a designated person at the County Council they can contact for advice and support.

Reading

Racist incident monitoring has been in place since 2001. Guidance for schools was issued in February of that year and launched at a conference for Head Teachers and Chairs of Governors.

With schools' agreement, termly reporting to the local authority was established to enable a quick response to those requiring support. A robust approach was taken to ensure a high level of returns from schools with a follow-up to those with late or persistent nil returns.
