A woman whose son has breathing difficulties wins a European court of justice ruling forbidding discrimination against carers.

A woman who was forced out of a company because she needed time to look after her disabled child has won what could be a landmark ruling at the European court of justice. The decision has implications for thousands of carers in the UK.

It ruled that a law firm discriminated against Sharon Coleman, whose son has serious breathing difficulties, by association.

It means that rules forbidding discrimination against disabled people in the workplace also apply to people who are their primary carers.

But business leaders say it could be hard for companies to cope if a new category of people needing specific treatment.
