More than 5,000 medical and scientific experts have gathered in Scotland as a major conference on the treatment of pain got under way.

The 12th World Congress on Pain is the biggest conference being hosted by Glasgow this year.

The gathering is expected to bring a boost of more than £10 million to tourism.

Scientists, medical professionals, students, nurses, psychologists and physical therapists are all taking part in the event, which will look at different types of pain and techniques for managing it.

The congress has previously been held in Paris, Hamburg, Florence and Sydney.

Steven Purcell, the leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, recently said he was delighted the conference had come to the city.

He said: "As well as reinforcing the city's position as a world class conference destination, it will bring £10.9 million of economic benefit to the tourism industry in Glasgow and the surrounding areas."

The conference is being held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre until August 22.

The event is sponsored by the International Association for the Study of Pain, whose president Troels S Jensen said: "Scotland is known to have produced some of the world's leading medical figures so naturally we are delighted that a city as diverse and dynamic as Glasgow will host the 12th World Congress on Pain."

Paulo Quadros, director of Glasgow centre Intlife Pain Management, is taking part in the conference. He said: "It's a positive move for Glasgow and the people of Scotland. I hope that seeing such an important event take place here means that pain services across the NHS are going to improve for the benefit of people's health."
