Pest infestation affects the majority of NHS hospitals in England, according to figures released by the Conservative party.

Seventy percent of NHS trusts needed to call in pest controllers during the last two years according to statistics released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust was the worst hit, with more than 1,000 incidents, while five other trusts had more than 800 outbreaks.

Most problems were in non-clinical areas, but among the infestations recorded in different hospitals were rats in a maternity unit, wasps in operating theatres, flying ants in wards and maggots in a slipper.
