The Foreign Office is investigating reports that a British tourist was allegedly raped by a teenage monk in Cambodia.

The Buddhist monk was arrested after the 39-year-old woman told police he attacked her while guiding her to a mountain-top temple.

According to reports, novice monk Thorn Sophoan, 17, confessed to police in Battambang province in north-western Cambodia.

Chief Inspector Mey Chhengly said that although details of the sexual attack were unclear, it appeared the woman had gone alone to the summit of the Phnom Sam Pov mountain.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are looking into the reports."
